Justice Ejaz Chaudhary had issued the directive to Pakistan telecommunications authority to re-open facebook after the officials of the famour networking site apoligised to the Muslim community and removed the controversial pages from the site.
Justice Chaudhary said in his remarks “Restore Facebook. We don’t want to block access to information,”
A Facebook user had organised a competition on Facebook by the name “Everybody Draw Mohammad Day” which sent an outcry in the Muslim community worldwide and protests throughout the country of Pakistan due to which Lahore High Court honouring the sentiments of the people of Pakistan ordered facebook to be blocked. The National Assembly’s standing commitee on Information and Broadcasting had also recommended that facebook be blocked throughout the country. A group of Islamic lawyers had filed a petition in Lahore High Court to block the famous networking site.
It is strictly prohibited in Islam the depiction of any prophet in any way and is termed as blasphemous. Chaudhary also suggested the PTA to install new system to control internet content that is un-Islamic similar to UAE and Saudi Arabia.
“It is the government’s job to take care of such things, which spark resentment among the people and bring them onto the streets. They should take steps to block any blasphemous content on the Internet,” Chaudhry said.
Officials from Information Ministry has assured the court that all such blasphemous content will remain blocked in the country.
